Ortiz vs Hooker odds: What’s the fuss about?

Tonight, surging welterweight Vergil Ortiz, Jr (16-0, 16 KO), one of the hottest young fighters in boxing, faces Maurice Hooker (27-1-3, 18 KO), his stiffest test to date.

… Or is it?

Fans, experts, and the media are labelling this fight as a dangerous, evenly matched battle between two rising stallions that’ll propel the winner one giant step closer to superstar status. However, the Ortiz vs Hooker odds tell a different story about this bout's perceived level of competitiveness.

Per Box.Live’s aggregate of top bettors, Vergil Ortiz Jr, 22, is the heavy favorite to win at 1/12 (-1249). The 31-year-old Hooker is a solid underdog at 6/1 (+600) via the same site. Hence, oddsmakers believe there is an 87% chance of Ortiz Jr winning.

Moreover, esteemed boxing radio show host Joseph Herron insists Hooker, although Ortiz’s most accomplished opponent to date, won’t be Vergil’s most difficult test.

Herron maintains Antonio Orozco (then 27-1, 17 KO), who was dispatched by Ortiz in six in 2019, presented a better stylistic challenge than will Hooker tonight.

“Can Vergil Ortiz take a good punch? That's the critcal question and we already have the answer,” Herron exclaimed.

“Orozco, one of the biggest punchers in the welterweight division, couldn’t phase Ortiz.”

“Hooker has power at jr welterweight but tonight’s bout will be his first in the welterweight division; Will Maurice even have world class punching power seven pounds north and against a pure welterweight in Ortiz?”

“Also, as we saw in his bout with Jose Carlos Ramirez, Hooker seems to a bit chinny,” Herron added, referencing the latter’s 6th Round TKO loss in July 2019.

“Ortiz is bigger, stronger and more polished than Orozco so how is Hooker going to keep Vergil off?”

“Hooker likes to bang and that’ll be the chink in his armor tonight. If he possessed better hit-and-move technical skills and used his height and reach advantage to try to outbox Vergil from the outside, this fight would be a little more compelling.”

“I’ll be surprised if Ortiz vs Hooker goes past five.”

“Should Ortiz win in dramatic fashion, promoters will start beating the drum for him to face superstar Terence Crawford in a mega showdown of champions later this year.”

Do you agree with the lopsided Ortiz vs Hooker odds and Herron’s assessment?
