Oscar De la Hoya: "We as Canelo's promoter haven't discussed anything whatsoever about any opponent"
Who will Saul "Canelo" Alvarez be facing on May 2nd?
Although several reports were released, stating that a deal was close for a championship bout between Canelo and current WBO Super Middleweight titlist Billy Joe Saunders, Golden Boy Promotions recently confirmed that nothing has been negotiated up to this point with either party.
"No, there's nothing there," claimed Oscar De la Hoya in a recent interview with FightSaga.com. "We as Canelo's promoter haven't discussed anything whatsoever about any opponent. But we hope that in the near future, within the next couple of days or weeks, we'll sit down with Team Canelo. Then we'll sit down with DAZN, and figure out the opponent."
After brokering a lucrative and exclusive 11 fight deal worth $365 million between Canelo and DAZN in October of 2018, it seems that Golden Boy Promotions is currently experiencing some communication issues with their superstar client of eleven plus years.
Immediately following comments made by Canelo Alvarez this past October in an interview with Mike Coppinger of "The Athletic.com", it became apparent that a certain degree of dissension had indeed formulated between Team Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions.
"You can see there’s no loyalty in him," Alvarez stated about GBP chairman and CEO Oscar De la Hoya. "He changed trainers during his career. He changed managers in his career. So, there's no loyalty. That's the way he is. We see it now."
"I'm a very loyal person, and we (Canelo, Eddy and Jose Reynoso) are a very loyal team. We're still together. But you can see there’s no loyalty in Oscar."
The statement came as a bit of a shock to most interested observers, especially considering the integral role GBP has seemingly played in Canelo's success.
Under the guidance and supervision of Golden Boy Promotions, the 29-year-old fighter has become one of the sport's biggest stars and a legitimate PPV franchise. Although Canelo signed a promotional extension with GBP upon making the five-year agreement with DAZN in 2018, it remains to be seen whether or not Alvarez has any desire to improve his ostensively strained relationship with Golden Boy Promotions.
When asked whether or not fight fans will finally get to see the third fight with longtime nemesis Gennady Golovkin this year, Oscar seemed understandably perplexed.
"Well that's up to Canelo," stated the Hall of Fame fighter. "If he wants to be the 'People's Champion', and that's exactly what people want, he'll do it...but it'll be up to Canelo."
Upon signing both Canelo and GGG exclusively to lucrative multi-fight deals, DAZN was hoping to broadcast an eventual third fight with both mainstream attractions. While there are indeed interesting fights to be made between Canelo and 168-pound champions Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders for 2020, Golovkin remains the only other international level star within the 160 and 175-pound range which would seem to potentially justify Canelo's mammoth $33.2 million per fight guarantee.
This could be where the apparent discord between GBP and Canelo currently stems.
While Golden Boy Promotions' primary obligation is to its fighters, it's in the organization's best interest to try and appease DAZN and their respective financial investment. Because GBP depends on numerous DAZN dates to nurture their growing stable of prospects and contenders, which currently includes Ryan Garcia, Vergil Ortiz, Jo Jo Diaz, Jorge Linares, Rey Vargas, and Jaime Munguia, maintaining a healthy relationship with both Canelo Alvarez and the streaming network becomes absolutely paramount.
Without Alvarez competing as a Golden Boy fighter, it would indeed become difficult to broker the best possible deals for the other talent within the GBP bullpen. Without DAZN and their numerous dates per year, it becomes virtually impossible to nurture their entire stable of talent.
Hopefully, both parties will be able to sort out their differences and realize, sooner rather than later, that their working relationship is indeed a symbiont one.
