Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2: Very superstitious…writings on the wall

“When you believe in things that you don’t understand, then you suffer…superstition ain’t the way” - Stevie Wonder, Motown Records - 1972 Last month it was leaked to the press that during the week of a big fight, Bradley has a no-bath ritual…fun fact for the intrusive media that will be in attendance this week in Vegas.

When asked about his unusual personal hygiene regimen, especially for an athlete, the current WBO Welterweight Champion was surprisingly candid.

“My superstitions, honestly, what I do the whole week of the fight…I don’t take a shower,” revealed Tim Bradley.

“I don’t know why that’s one thing I just don’t do. I don’t care what anyone says, because I truly believe it’s part of the reason why I’m undefeated through 31 fights. I’m not ashamed of being me.”

“It’s true…that week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday…I don’t shower.”

When asked about his opponent’s bizarre pre-fight ritual, Pacquiao was surprisingly respectful of the fight week custom and only had one thing to say about it.

“You need to take a bath if you’re a fighter…so you won’t stink,” stated Manny Pacquiao.

Although it’s within Pacquiao’s character not to cast aspersions, the eight division world champion did seem extraordinarily courteous about Bradley’s superstitious practice.

To provide fight fans with a possible explanation as to why, director of the critically acclaimed “Manny” documentary, Ryan Moore, discussed some of the Pacman’s unusual pre-fight habits.

“Pacquiao does everything the same way,” claims the insightful writer and director. “He’s a creature of habit. It’s like clockwork for him, almost to the point of being superstitious.”

“Every day when he trains, Manny will eat about 7000 calories, and he’ll burn about 5,000. He eats at the same times every day, and he’ll rest at the exact same times as well. Everything is a routine for him; the number of sit-ups per day, the amount of the time that he jumps rope, and down to the distance that he runs per diem.”

“Manny is loyal to his routine, and everything is on the mark. He’s meticulous and disciplined…like a machine.”

“Leading up to a fight, he leaves every Monday from the same place and at the same time. Pacman will even go to the same service station to gas up the very first SUV that he bought here in the states. It’s not the nicest vehicle and he can easily afford something newer, but he likes to keep everything exactly the same before a fight.”

“So Manny will drive into Vegas…he won’t fly, and he’ll arrive at the exact same time.”

While most spectators will scoff at the curious pre-fight customs of both fighters, pundits should consider the fact that the combined record of the two April 12th combatants is a staggering 86-5-2; with a phenomenal 92.5% winning percentage.

Perhaps the legendary musician Stevie Wonder was wrong…maybe superstition is the way!

In a sport that defies all logic, anything is possible.
