Samuel Peter (34-5, 27 KOs) - Former heavyweight champion, former Olympian, devout Christian and family man.
Sam Peter was born in Uyo, Nigeria into a middle class family and is the first Nigerian Heavyweight Champion.

As a youth, Peter's first love was soccer. But at 16, the young man found boxing. He had about 20 amateur bouts and was later chosen to represent Nigeria as a Super Heavyweight at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

The consummate professional, Peter has fought some of the heavyweight divisions's top fighters the past seven years including Wladimir Klitschko (twice), Vitali Klitschko, James Toney (twice), Eddie Chambers, Jameel MCline and Oleg Maskaev from whom he won the WBC Heavyweight Title from on March 8, 2008.

However, the fighter dubbed the 'Nigerian Nightmare' last fought 18 months ago and was knocked out by Finnish contender Robert Helenius.

Although Peter is well-traveled, he is still relatively young.

At 32, he seemingly would be hitting his prime as a heavyweight. And given his accomplishments, there are probably some lucrative options for him should he decide to fight in the near future.

He attempted to make a comeback this past August against journeyman Harold Sconiers (then 18-24-2) but the fight fell through. And in recent years, Peter has called out Chris Arreola yet received no reply,

Noted for his tremendous punching power, the 6'2" Peter is an orthodox fighter who, in recent years, has generally entered the ring between 240 and 270 lbs. And in addition to being the quintessential puncher, big Sam possess considerable boxing skills and is a master of the shoulder roll and triple jab. He also has good head movement.

In his most recent bout against Robert Helenius in April 2011, Peter fought without a reputable trainer, had no cutman and appeared considerably overweight.

Did Peter lose his nerve?

After all, he was dominated in his rematch with Wladimir Klitschko before falling to the champion in ten rounds in September 2010.

Can Sam Peter still be a force?

Fights with Bryant Jennings, Dereck Chisora, Tomasz Adamek and Alexander Povetkin would be intriguing match-ups that would offer Sam a fairly considerablle bounty.

Sam Peter, who once struck fear in the hearts of opponents and boxing fans alike, famously floored Wladimir Klitschko three times during their first bout in 2005 and had the heart of get off the canvas three times himself to earn a unanimous decision against Jameel McCline in 2007.

Will he fight again?

Inquiring minds want to know.
