Roy Jones Jr. fighting Feb 8 in PensacolaHot
Fight legend Roy Jones Jr. (65-9, 47 KO) will fight at least once more and that bout will take place in his hometown of Pensacola, FL on Thursday, February 8.
Jones, who will be 49 on Jan. 16, will fight in the main event of Island Fights 46 at Pensacola Bay Center against an opponent yet to be named, according the Pensacola News Journal.
And like many of RJ's shows of late, the fight card will feature a mixture of boxing and mixed martial arts.
Jones, via Twitter, called it "My last day at the Bay."
"It's my last one for the bayfront ... Civic Center, Pensacola, Bayfront Arena, whatever you want to call it. So if you want to come to see my last day in Pensacola, be there February 8. That's my last one there."
Tickets will go on sale Jan. 5. The tickets will be priced at $20 to $70.
RJ is, of course, still trying to reach a deal to face MMA legend Anderson Silva in a boxing match. However, if Silva is still under contract with UFC that bout won't happen anytime soon.
Just can't stop
"I don't want no farewell video," the fight legend told BoxingScene.com a few weeks ago.
"When I'm in the coffin you can talk about my stuff. I don't want to go, I want to still be fighting and be in the coffin throwing punches at people. I don't want to go out like that [with a farewell event], that's their stuff, I don't do all that,"
"How can I tell him [Oscar De La Hoya] not to do it when I'm still doing it? I can't tell him don't do it when I'm still doing it too," Jones said.
Some fans demean Jones for his continuance in the sport 20+ years past his prime, and because he's only 15-8 in his last 23 bouts and has been knocked out six times. And yes, several of those knockouts have been devastating.
....But what some fail to remember is RJ has never been beaten by an opponent who wasn't accomplished. Fans can be harsh is their assessment of Jones but to his credit, he hasn't been beaten by run-of-the-mill opponents.
Jones dominated the boxing scene from 1993 to 2004 and was an exceptional multi-talented fighter with incredible speed, explosiveness and technical prowess.
The consensus Fighter of the 1990s, Roy Jones, Jr has won world titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight, and is undoubtedly one of the greatest fighters ever.
