Roy Jones Jr Results: Jones Wins But it's the End of an EraHot
Tonight before a raucous crowd in Lodz, Poland, 43 year old fight legend Roy Jones Jr (55-8, 40 KO) faced untested, undefeated light heavyweight contender Pawel Glazewski (17-0, 4 KO). The bout was contested at cruiserweight.
It's time for Jones to hang 'em up.
Sadly, the Roy Jones who entered the ring tonight was a far cry from even the Roy Jones of 2004. And the Roy Jones of the 1990s is simply a distant memory... very distant.
The legendary Jones has nothing left.
He won a split decision .... But it was far from convincing and his opponent was far from dangerous.
The scores were 96-93 and 96-94 for Jones and 94-95 for Glazewski. Boos erupted after the winner was announced.
Roy Jones came out flat-footed in the opening stanza utilizing a quick left jab while his opponent unleashed heavy shots to the body and head. Most of Pawel's shots missed or were blocked but they may have been enough to win him the round.
Jones showboated a bit throughout but his antics were of no avail. Pawel missed wildly but connected on a few good shots early on.
In the third, Pawel started fast, attempting to smother Jones. Pawel was able to land a few left hooks over the lazy guard of Jones. Although Pawel wasnt landing much, he was coming forward, making the fight happen and throwing hard punches while Jones offered little in return.
In the fifth, Pawel got bold and appeared to momentarily stun Jones. In retaliation, Jones unleashed a short but furious assault that had the Pole back-tracking. Jones, now the stalker, opened up a bit more but failed to follow-up on his work.
Jones was knocked down in the sixth by a hard left hook but didn't appear hurt. However, Pawel's flurry in the closing seconds seemed to stun Jones as the legend offered little offense in return.
In the ninth Jones landed a sweeping check hook that momentarily stunned Pawel. The Jones of old would have finished him with a sweet combination but the 'old Roy Jones' settled back and allowed his opponent to recover.
To his credit, Jones utilized an effective left jab and seemed to control the action when he wanted to. But he really didn't "beat" his opponent tonight. He won a courteous decision that could have conceivably gone the other way.
Prior to tonight, Pawel Glazewski had never faced a man the size of Roy Jones Jr nor had he faced a 'name' pugilist. In his most recent fight, Pawel earned a 6 round unanimous decision over Matthew Barney (then 26-8-1) in December.
The win likely guarantees Jones a shot at WBC Cruiserweight Champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (46-2-1, 33KOs) later this year.
Expect Roy to be a heavy underdog.
