Sergey Kovalev vs Andre Ward prediction: Freddie Roach expoundsHot
Predictions vary for next month's superfight between unified light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and former lineal super middleweight champion Andre Ward.
Those who favor Ward believe he's too skilled and polished for his Russian foe while those who tab Kovalev believe the champion is too strong and relentless for the former United States Olympic Gold Medalist.
Location: Las Vegas
Venue: T-Mobile Arena
Division: Light Heavyweight
Titles: WBA, IBF, WBO
Champion: Sergey Kovalev
Favorite: Slightly Ward
"I like Kovalev," the trainer of champions told the press via BoxingScene.com recently.
"I think he's the best light heavyweight in the world. I don't think there is anyone out there that can beat him right now [at 175-pounds] - including Andre Ward."
However, there is a caveat... Roach suggests if Sergey Kovalev does not stop Andre Ward inside the distance, the challenger would likely win on points.
"I think that Kovalev has to stop him to win the fight or else he will get outboxed, because Ward is a great boxer."
Roached added, "A puncher and a boxer, but the puncher has proven that he can box a little bit when he fought Hopkins."
But keep in mind, Kovalev couldn't stop a shopworn, 50-year-old B-HOP despite having him hurt. And if Ward has experienced any self-doubt about this fight, it must be encouraging to know Bernard went the distance.
Nevertheless, the Russian is nothing less than devastating in the ring. And while he's strong, what makes him so special is his sense of range and ability to cut off the ring.
Unlike many naturally-hard punchers who try to capitalize on an opponent's mistakes in order to unleash their bombs, Sergey creates those opportunities himself.
He's almost always in position to drop his nukes, and is dangerous for every second of every minute in every round.
Can the sly, gifted defensive specialist defeat a relentless offensive machine?
