Shannon Briggs: Building a fan base in the UK
WIll former heavyweight title holder Shannon Briggs steal fans from David Haye on the latter's home turf?
Earlier this week, the colorful Briggs told Brendan Taylor of Tru School Sports about his experience in the UK when he recently visited the country to drum up support for a bout with British favorite David Haye.
"The Fans were amazing. I couldn't believe ... the... the fansom was just crazy..."
"They just love boxing... the passion. You know they love boxing. Everyone loves boxing everywehere you go."
"Boxing's a huge sport there. "
"Unlike in America where you have basketball, football [and] so many other sports, Boxing's like a number one sport there."
"... Being that boxing ranks so high, it was great to be there and be liked and respected for what I do."
"They love [my] 'Let's Go Champ' [Movement.'] They're inspired, they're motivated, I'm motivated."
"Let's Go Champ."
Briggs, who will fight in London May 21 on undercard of Haye vs Arnold Gjergjaj seems to be developing a fanbase in the UK and insists his 'Let's Go Champ' movement is inspiring the British faithful.
Should both favorites, Haye and Briggs, win their respective bouts, a showdown between the two titans is almost a virtual lock due to Shannon's popularity there.
Will the Brits adopt the charismatic Briggs the same way Germany adopted the (Ukranian) Klitschkos?
Don't be surprised if the loquacious Briggs, who has been experiencing a revival of sorts in boxing, continues to build a following in the UK.
His stock there is very high.
