Mayweather vs Pacquiao? Sorry Floyd, it won't happen without Bob Arum

Last week it was reported that Floyd Mayweather allegedly offered Bob Arum $10 million in step aside money to possibly put together a deal with eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao without the supposed interference of the Top Rank CEO.

While the gesture undoubtedly made perfect sense to Mayweather, the offer wasn't very realistic.

Although the pound for pound king of boxing has expressed his personal disdain for the Hall of Fame promoter many times in the past, Mayweather will have to forget about any existing animosity if he wants to make a record payday of $100 million.

According to head trainer Freddie Roach, a financial deal can't be made without the efforts of the 82 year old promoter.

"I know that CBS, who owns Showtime, has been losing their a$$ on Floyd's shows," the Hall of Fame trainer told John Dennen of Boxing News Online. "The only way to bail themselves out of that loss is Manny."

So the prolific fight trainer arranged a meeting between CBS President and CEO Les Moonves and Arum at Bob's home in Beverly Hills. The two men met with the intention of discussing a plan of action, and came up with a viable solution.

Although Freddie admits Moonves showed some genuine resistance when approached with the idea of working with the four decade fight promoter, the CBS executive eventually warmed up to the notion after speaking with the Top Rank visionary.

"Initially, Moonves was trying to make the deal on his own, but I told him that Bob had to be part of the deal. He's got Manny," explained the expert boxing coach. "I was at the meeting at Bob's house, and if both men do what they said they were going to do, the fight will happen."

For years, former Senior Vice President of Top Rank, M. Akbar Muhammad, had been offering Bob millions of dollars from an investment group in the United Arab Emirates to help stage a massive event featuring the two super star fighters. But the timing never seemed to be appropriate to call on Muhammad's assistance...until now.

Immediately following this past Saturday night's Top Rank fight card in Omaha, Nebraska, the always candid Bob Arum was overheard by several media members in attendance, stating that he was headed to Abu Dhabi to collect the funds necessary to help stage the Pacquiao/Mayweather super fight next year.

"We're going to Abu Dhabi to collect some money from Akbar Muhammad," stated the 82 year old fight promoter. "We're picking up $110 million for Mayweather/Pacquiao."

Although an official "Mayweather/Pacquiao" fight deal is far from being reached, it would seem that Floyd absolutely needs Bob Arum if he wants to make a record setting purse in excess of $100 million.

So, Floyd...you may not like working with Bob Arum, but you'd better learn to love it.
