With most of the focus from the boxing community still fixated on Manny Pacquiao’s impressive unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated WBO Junior Welterweight title holder Chris Algieri, which took place in Macao, China, this past weekend, questions concerning a super fight with Floyd Mayweather has once again become the topic du jour.

Will the controversial match-up finally take place in 2015?

While many fans are indeed optimistic, there are a great number of die-hard skeptics who truly believe that Mayweather is and will forever be genuinely afraid to step in the ring with the 5’6” Pacman.

On yesterday’s edition of ESPN‘s “First Take with Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless”, Smith not only defended Floyd, but also eluded to the idea that fear was not a reason why the fight between the world’s best pound for pound fighter and Manny Pacquiao hasn’t taken place up to this point.

“I had somebody that’s connected to Floyd Mayweather’s people tell me that Floyd offered Bob Arum ten million dollars to essentially step out of the way,” stated the popular ESPN personality. “So clearly this is about Arum and not about Manny Pacquiao.”

“If Floyd was scared, he wouldn’t be doing such things. I don’t believe that he’s scared by any stretch of the imagination. But I do believe the pressure is mounting for Mayweather.”

What is the “pressure” to which the Philly based media member was referring?

Is Stephen A. talking about monetary influence from Showtime/CBS?

Although the major television companies could become a major pressure point in finally motivating Floyd Mayweather Jr. to eventually reach a deal with the Pacman, the popular TV sports authority was referring to the pressure created by the real bosses of boxing; the fight fans.

“It’s gotten to the point where his unblemished, undefeated, sure fire, Hall of Fame credentials mean absolutely nothing to us at this moment in time,” proclaims Stephen A. Smith. “We want Floyd Mayweather against Manny Pacquiao.”

“Anytime you hear someone talk about Floyd Mayweather now, they keep talking about the fight, the fight, the fight. What they keep reminding him in my opinion, is what boxing is really all about.”

“Ali would have never been Ali if he had never fought Frazier, or Norton, or Foreman. There are losses in all of the greats’ resumes. But there’s something to be said about stepping in the ring and facing the fighters that people want to see you up against.”

“And especially when people have heard Floyd say that he intends to retire next fall, the heat is going to intensify immensely to give us a fight with Manny Pacquiao.”

Smith ended the Monday morning segment with his prediction on not only whether or not a fight between Floyd and Manny would eventually materialize, but also how the battle would inevitably play out.

“I believe Floyd Mayweather will sign to fight Manny Pacquiao, and I believe it will happen before June of 2015, and I believe Floyd Mayweather will take him out.”
