Terence Crawford: Net worth, purses (May 2017)Hot
Tomorrow night, WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford (30-0, 21KO) faces Felix Diaz in New York in a bout that will be broadcast on HBO.
Crawford made his professional debut on March 14, 2008, earning a first round knockout. In fact, the Omaha, Nebraska native would win his first 19 bouts, generating 15 KOs in the process. But despite his fine record, Terence generated little buzz because the level of his opposition left a lot to be desired.
Crawford bursts into the spotlight
In March 2013, a little-known Crawford stepped in on just three day’s notice to face respected former WBO lightweight champion Breidis Prescott (26-4, 20 KOs) on an undercard bout that would be televised live on HBO. Terence would seize the moment, winning a lopsided decision and impressing fans along the way.
He would also earn a $125K purse, by far the biggest of his career to that point.
Since the Prescott bout, Terence has become a star to hardcore boxing fans but has yet to be a mainstream item. Now one of HBO’s most prized assets, Crawford seems to have all the skills to necessary to become a sports celebrity. And when or if he does, look for his net worth to skyrocket.
As of May 2017, Crawford's net worth is purportedly $3 to $4 Million.
A year ago, Terence unified the WBC and WBO version of the light welterweight title by defeating Viktor Postol (then 28-0, 12 KOs). Crawford won by unanimous decision, also claiming the prestigious RING Magazine title. For that bout, he is believed to have earned a purse of $1.3 million.
For his most recent bout against John Molina, Jr in December, Crawford is believed to have earned $1.9 Million which included a $400,000 penalty Molina had to pay Terence for weighing four pounds over the 140-pound limit. Terence's contractual purse was $1.5 Million.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum insists Terence Crawford is the best fighter of his generation, and a big PPV showdown with welterweight superstar and WBO Champion Manny Pacquiao is possible for November.
Terence Crawford is a great fighter and undoubtedly one of the best in boxing. However, does he possess the box office appeal of Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather or Oscar De La Hoya?
Fighters with the highest net worth and largest purses are not only awesome inside the ring, they are intriguing personalities outside of it. Some fighters, like Muhammad Ali, Rocky Marciano and even Canelo Alvarez, simply have natural star power which makes them even bigger draws.
Would a victory over Pacquiao thrust Crawford into mainstream stardom and generate for him much higher subsequent purse sums?
