Tony Thompson: Will boxing's biggest spoiler face Hughie Fury?
So much for two young, undefeated heavyweight contenders clashing on October 29th.
Andy Ruiz has pulled out of his fight with Hughie Fury which was slated to be the main undercard bout of the lineal heavyweight championship rematch between Wladimir Klitschko and Hughie's cousin, Tyson Fury.
At just 22, Fury is 20-0, 10 KOs but has yet to be tested by anyone of merit. Who will step in to face the surging Brit?
Enter: Tony Thompson (40-7, 27 KO)
Although no opponent has been selected yet, the near 45 year old veteran told BoxingScene.com earlier today, "I'd be willing to go and fight him in his house tomorrow."
"Peter Fury can be the referee and Tyson Fury can be the judge. Of course I would gladly whoop Baby Hughie's ass."
"Maybe in 10 years he'll know what he's doing, but right know he don't know sh*t and I'd be more than happy to give Baby Hughie a diaper change on October 29."
Will Team Fury allow their man to face a seasoned southpaw with heaps of experience?
How many times has Tony Thompson been called in to be a mere "opponent" to showcase an emerging fighter.
And how many times has he spoiled the show?
Promoters and managers for the following learned the hard way: Dominick Guinn, Luan Krasniqi, Timur Ibragimov, David Price (twice), Owen Beck, Chazz Witherspoon and Odlanier Solis (twice).
Simply put, Tony Thompson has been a nightmare for A-side fighters and their promoters.
And If you're British and didn't know who Tony Thompson was prior to 2013, there's a good chance you're familiar with him now thanks to his back-to-back knockout wins over a then-red hot David Price.
And if you're a boxing fan, you might be asking yourself, "How would Hughie Fury, today's top British heavyweight prospect, fair against a solid heavyweight veteran who disposed of Price twice?
A tough, cagey, awkward southpaw, Tony, even in defeat, is capable of making anyone look bad. And despite being 45, he fights with the hunger and desire of a man in his 20s.
Will Team Hughie risk it all against Tony Thompson?
