Triple G vs Oscar De La Hoya? Golden Boy to fight Golovkin?

Yesterday, FightSaga reported retired boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya, 42, is considering a return to the ring.

If he makes a comeback, we should expect to see him against Shane Mosley and other fighters in their late 30s and 40s, right?

Wrong.

According to TMZ, De La Hoya wants Gennady Golovkin, the most destructive fighter in boxing.

Given his age and the fact he's been out of the ring seven years, it's hard to imagine Oscar facing Golovkin straightaway. He'll need at least two tune-ups if not more.

So, does Oscar have a chance against Golovkin?

Stylistically and size-wise, he'd be much better off facing Floyd again but, at 42, would he be healthy at super welterweight (154 lbs)?

A refreshed, well-trained and well-prepared De La Hoya could break into the top ten at middleweight after a few tune-ups, but Gennady Golovkin is an entirely different animal than a top contender.

At 160 lbs, he would have given even a 31 year old De La Hoya in prime condition problems.

Oscar has fought at middleweight only twice. He defeated Felix Sturm via a razor thin verdict in 2004 before being KO'd by the division's champion at the time, Bernard Hopkins, later that year.

In order to compete with Golovkin, Oscar will need to showcase the same power at middleweight that he had at super lightweight and welterweight; something he failed to do in his middleweight bouts 11 years ago.

When De La Hoya last fought in December 2008, he was beat down over eight one-sided rounds and forced to quit on his stool against Manny Pacquiao. Emaciated, Oscar entered the bout at 145 lbs, his lightest weight in 11 years and appeared weak and sluggish.
