Usyk vs Chisora Odds and Prediction: Former champion sees big upset on May 23rd
Barring an interruption stemming from the current COVID-19 crisis, former lineal Cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk will square off against perennial tough man and upset-minded Heavyweight contender Dereck Chisora on Saturday, May 23rd, at the O2 Arena in London, England.
While most critics and ringside observers believe the 33-year-old Ukrainian to be on a different technical level than the hard-nosed Briton, many are surprised that Usyk chose to take on such a challenging assignment before claiming his opportunity to face current WBO/IBF/WBA Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
Former Cruiser and Heavyweight champion David Haye loves the decision and applauds Usyk's courage.
"Usyk has the winning lottery ticket right now," Haye recently told "Behind the Gloves". "He could just go to the Bahamas, chill out with a mojito and just cash it in when the time is right, but he's not."
"That's why I'm a fan of Usyk, because he wants challenges. He wants to test himself. That's the kind of mindset that creates undisputed champions."
It's also a mindset that inspires boxing fans.
In this era of soft touches and inflated purses, in which we've seen contenders and title holders price themselves out of big fight opportunities, the willingness to take on an aggressive fight veteran like Dereck Chisora voluntarily is a breath of fresh air...especially when one considers the fact that the fight is set to take place in Delboy's backyard.
"He'll earn more in one fight with AJ, than he's earned throughout his entire professional career up to this point, but he doesn't care. He's not in it for the money apparently. He's in it for the glory. He realizes he has to beat someone like Chisora to give himself the best chance to beat someone like Joshua."
"Unfortunately I think he picked the wrong guy. There are so many other heavyweights he could have chosen, that are even ranked higher than Dereck, but he hasn't. He's chosen Dereck...and I'm like, 'thank you very much'. This is music to my ears."
Haye points to the fact that Usyk hasn't seen an aggressive style like Chisora's often while competing as an amateur or a professional, in which he'll be forced to deal with consistent pressure for all scheduled twelve rounds.
It's often said in boxing that "pressure can either break pipes or create a diamond".
The Hayemaker believes the match-up could produce the former.
"Usyk has never lost a professional contest, he's an Olympic gold medalist...the guy is an absolute freak in terms of technical ability," states the last lineal Cruiserweight champion to also win a major Heavyweight title. "He's a brilliant, excellent, exceptional fighter who's moved up in weight and has entered the unknown."
"We really don't know how he's going to deal with a real heavyweight who drags him into a dogfight."
"We've seen him (Usyk) in a boxing match. And in a boxing match, he wins five times out of five. But how does he fare when the fight gets rough and tough, in which he's put on 15 pounds of muscle? Then all of a sudden, that pace that he was used to at 90 kilos (198 lbs), he can't maintain it past rounds 6,7, and 8, while Dereck is just getting warmed up."
"The freight train just keeps coming and coming. You know, he might just have to hold his feet a little bit and start exchanging with Dereck."
Despite being recognized as the justified favorite in this contest, David sees a mild upset on the horizon.
According to most race and sports books, Oleksandr Usyk is currently listed as a sizeable 5 1/2 to 1 (-550) betting favorite, with Dereck Chisora sitting as a very live 3 1/2 to 1 (+350) betting underdog.
So yes; a Chisora victory would be a notable upset.
Regardless of who has their arm raised in victory on May 23rd, the real winners will be the fight fans in attendance and the viewing audience at home. But the victor will earn an opportunity to compete for the WBO Heavyweight title in the near future.
