So what are the fighters' next fight options? Obviously, it depends on what happens in the ring tonight.
Nicholas Walters next fight options
Win or lose tonight, Walters has many options. Should he win, his first and most likely option would be a rematch with Lomachenko. After all, the Ukrainian is the A-side, the strong favorite and the defending super featherweight champion.
A second option, win or lose, is the brutish, always-exciting Orlando Salido (43-13-4, 30 KO), the only fighter to defeat Lomachenko as a pro. Has Salido ever been in a fight that wasn't crowd-pleasing? Also, a rematch and title unification bout with WBA super featherweight champion Jason Sosa (20-1-4, 15 KO) might be in the offing. The pair controversially drew in December.
WBC super featherweight champ Francisco Vargas (20-0-2, 17 KO) might be thrust into the picture as well. Vargas, of course, recently drew with bad boy veteran Orlando Salido.
Vasyl Lomachenko next fight options
Obviously, a win for Lomo may set-up a mega superfight with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KO). PacMan's trainer, Freddie Roach, has made it no secret his man can drop to 140 lbs, and Vasyl insists he would happily accept a showdown at that weight.
Of course, Lomachenko must sizzle tonight to create the momentum for a Pacquiao fight.
Should Vasyl win tonight and the Pacquiao fight is not immediately available, the Ukrainian, like middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin, may attempt to collect as many belts as possible in his division. Should go that route, next fight possibilities might include Francisco Vargas 23-0-2 (17 KO), IBF Champ Jose Pedraza (22-0, 12 KO) and WBA belt holder Jezreel Corrales (28-1, 12KO).
... But would any of those guys satiate Lomachenko's presumed desire for a high-profile big-money fight?
He may also consider a fight at 140 against the likes of fellow Ukrainian Viktor Postol (28-1, 12 KO) or flamboyant belt-holder Adrien Broner (32-2, 24 KO). But given the risk vs reward factor on all ends, those bouts are longshots for next year.
Who will Nicholas Walters and Vasyl Lomachenko fight next? Tonight will give us a little bit more clarity.
