Vitali Klitschko: Kyiv mayor very aggressive on Coronavirus

Lee Cleveland Updated March 29, 2020

Vitali Klitschko, former heavyweight champion and the current mayor of Kyiv, has asked his city's residents to report citizens who have symptoms of coronavirus, per Ukrainian News Agency.

If you live in Kyiv and hear your neighbor coughling a lot, report them.

"These people need to be sent immediately for treatment or sent to isolation, so the city government creates a monitoring group that will work on collecting information from family doctors, the Kyiv laboratory center of the Ministry of Health, the State Border Guard Service, the Main Directorate of the National Police," said Klitschko.

"Kyiv residents should also connect to this and provide information about known cases or people who have contact with potential patients," Klitschko urged.

Klitschko reminded citizens the virus spreads quickly and easily and insisted the best way to stop it, at the moment, is to greatly reduce social contacts and ensure all potential carriers are in treatment and isolation.

Mayor Klitschko has also asked for a database that contains the names and addresses of all sick Kyiv residents (based on citizen reports and other forms of imformaton) and anyone who was recently in contact with them.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the number of patients with coronavirus in Kyiv jumped from 47 people to 55.

Kyiv's population of 2.9 million is comparable to Chicago.

Do you agree with Klitschko?

How soon will people be tested and what determines 'sick?'

And will sick people be quickly released if they test negative?

Perhaps more cities, worldwide, will adopt Vitali's approach?

Vitali Klitschko became actively involved in Ukrainian politics in 2005 and combined this with his professional boxing career until his retirement from the sport in 2013.

He's been mayor since 2014.

Coronavirus symptoms

People may be sick with the virus for 1 to 14 days before developing symptoms. The most common symptoms of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing special treatment.

More rarely, the disease can be serious and even fatal. Older people, and people with other medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), may be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill.

People may experience:
cough
fever
tiredness
difficulty breathing (severe cases)
loss of smell and taste (sometimes)
