Wilder vs. Fury 2 purses: "Fury and Wilder could make over $40 million each," says promoter
What a difference just a few months can make.
When the rematch between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury was initially announced back in December of 2019, most critics scoffed at the numbers Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum felt the PPV could realistically reach.
"I would be disappointed if the PPV did less than 2 million buys," Arum stated to fight scribe Michael Woods on December 15th. "That's the goal and estimation. I think it's doable and PBC thinks it's doable, and we're pulling off all the stops to reach that number or exceed it."
Back then, the dubious promotional strategy was to simply "piggy-back" off of the other major US sporting events, with promotional spots in several NCAA bowl games and the NFL's Super Bowl, without the benefit of official press events to push sales and alert mainstream media outlets.
Despite being a superb match-up, neither man ostensibly had the mainstream draw of a "Mike Tyson" or "Evander Holyfield" to realistically drive those kinds of numbers. Obviously, the match-ups earning potential was great, but the event needed some kind of "boost" to reach its desired audience.
After re-assessing the strategy and carefully analyzing the numbers, all parties involved agreed that a more aggressive strategy was required to maximize the grand event's earning potential.
The more assertive strategy, which involved a much heavier promotional commitment from both ESPN and FOX Sports, is seemingly paying off, and "Wilder vs. Fury 2" has consequently become the most popular mainstream boxing event since Mayweather vs. McGregor in August of 2017.

As a result, it would appear that the Bob-father's initial projection of 2 million PPV purchases in America could actually come to fruition this Saturday night.
The US PPV will carry a $79.95 price tag, with 50% of the proceeds going to ESPN, FOX and the various cable and satellite distributors showing the contest. That would mean both fighters, Top Rank Inc, and PBC would divide whatever proceeds remain.

So how much would each fighter receive after all costs are extracted?
"Obviously there are guarantees that each gets," Arum stated to FightHype.com. "But I'm not going to get into it. There are confidentiality provisions in place on Tyson's part, and I have absolutely no idea what Wilder is getting."
"We know what the gate is," claims the Hall of Fame promoter. "It's sold out, so the gate will be about $16 million, less the taxes."
"We know the closed circuit, albeit small, is doing better than anybody anticipated."
"What we don't know is the English PPV and the US PPV."
As most fans and media members recognize, the real money is in the PPV performance on Saturday night. All parties involved are extremely optimistic that Wilder vs. Fury 2 will prove to be a huge commercial and critical hit in the US and abroad.
"I talked to Frank Warren, co-promoter with Tyson Fury, and he believes that the English PPV, even at 4 AM, will reach a million homes. So that would end up being $20 million."
"And if the American PPV hits 2 million purchases, that would bring in $160 million, less what the networks and cable providers take. So realistically, they could make over $40 million each."
"I don't know for sure what Wilder would get, but I do know that my guy would get over $40 million if those numbers do hit."
Should both men reach their maximum earning potential on Saturday night, and deliver a drama-filled classic in the ring, "Wilder vs. Fury 2" could bring boxing back to mainstream consciousness in America, and pave the way for more TV dates and additional subscriber-based network interest.
Could anyone imagine boxing on Netflix in 2021?
