Wladimir Klitschko: Next fight for missing title?
During that fight, Pulev was floored twice in Round 1 and once in Round 3, and was flattened in Round 5. But despite losing every round on the scorecards, Pulev was resilient and managed to land a few impressive shots on the champion.
In the end, all three judges had the fight scored 40-33 for Klitschko at the time of the knockout.
Now, Klitschko is just three title defenses away from tying fight legend Larry Holmes for second place for the most consecutive heavyweight title defenses at 20.
The record, of course, for consecutive title defenses in any class belongs to the late Joe Louis, also a heavyweight, with 25.
Approaching some big names in heavyweight history, 'Dr. Steelhammer' has won 21 fights in a row and has not been defeated in over ten years.
So who will the 38 year old Wladimir Klitschko fight next? His manager, Bernd Boente, told Sportboxlast November that Wlad will return this Spring, perhaps in March or April.
Will Wlad become the first heavyweight champion to concurrently hold four major titles and status as the RING Magazine/ lineal champ and become the first "undisputed" heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999? At the time, Lewis concurrently held the WBC, IBF and WBA heavyweight titles.
"The candidates, [for Klitschko's next fight] include Bryant Jennings and the winner of the fight between WBC champion Bermane Stiverne and Deontay Wilder," Boente said.
"This is our primary goal: to return the WBC belt to the Klitschko family."
Look for Klitschko to make it a priority to fight the winner of the fight between WBC champion Bermane Stiverne and Deontay Wilder but it may not happen next as Boente hinted Tyson Fury is also in play.
"Of course, it is my goal to bring the WBC title back into the Klitschko family," Wladimir told German daily Bild after his brother relinquished the WBC title late last year.
Now mayor of Kiev, Ukraine, Vitali said after the Pulev fight:
"I don't see anyone in the world who can beat him," Vitali said after Klitschko vs Pulev.
"Age is just making him stronger."
