Emanuel Steward to Train Cuban Star, Yuriorkis GamboaWritten by Leroy Cleveland
Legendary trainer Emanuel Steward has agreed to train rising featherweight superstar Yuriorkis Gamboa, according to Ahmet Öner, who co-promotes Gamboa with Top Rank.
Steward, 67, has trained/managed over 40 World Champions including World Heavyweight Champion, Wladimir Klitschko, Prince Naseem Hamed, Thomas Hearns, Evander Holyfield, Michael Moorer, Lennox Lewis, Gerald McCllelan, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto.
"It's a great honor that a living legend like Emanuel Steward decided to work with me," Gamboa said. "I'm proud and looking forward to our cooperation. I know that I'm good but I also know that there is always a lot left to learn. Emanuel Steward is one of the most experienced and best trainers in the world." (Quote source: ESPN)
As a commentator for HBO, Steward has seen Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16 KOs) in action up close, and well understands the 29 year old's strengths and weaknesses.
"I'm too old to waste my time, so I pick my fighters very thoroughly," Steward said. "I only work with the best and I see a lot of potential in Gamboa. He's a superstar in the making and I'm excited to be part of this process. I'm looking forward to working with him."

Its not known why Gamboa parted ways with his previous trainer, Ismael Salas, last month following his workman-like win over the tough and rugged Daniel Ponce De Leon.
Gamboa will have to compete with Wladimir Klitschko, Andy Lee and HBO for Steward's time and attention as Miguel Cotto and Chad Dawson recently parted ways with the legendary trainer as a result of scheduling and logsitics-related conflicts.
Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16 KO), who won a gold metal representing Cuba at the 2004 Olympics, launched his professional career in 2007 after defecting from his native land. He's held the IBF Featherweight and WBA Featherweight titles and has defeated standouts Daniel Ponce de Leon, Jorge Solis, and Orlando Salido.
"Emanuel Steward is one of the best trainers in the world. With Gamboa he now has one of the best fighters in the world," Gamboa's co-promoter, Ahmet Öner, said. "I am very happy with this solution and I hope that Steward will take Gamboa to the next level. Yuri is already a complete fighter but it doesn't matter how good you are. A great trainer will always find a way to make you even better. (Quote source: ESPN)
Gamboa's team is looking to have him back in action early next year. At featherweight, possible opponents are Juan Manuel Lopez, Chris John, Celestino Caballero, Jhonny Gonzalez, Miguel Angel Garcia and Billy Dib.
