Sergio Martinez or Gennady Golovkin vs Joshua Clottey?

Written by
He's back! Former welterweight world champion Joshua Clottey 36-4 with 22 KO's has signed an exclusive promotional contract with Star Boxing of Long Island.
The native of Ghana, who now makes his home in the Bronx, has etched victories over some of the very best in the welterweight division including Diego Corrales and Zab Judah.

Known as the "Grand Master," Clottey has also gone 12 hard-fought rounds with world champions Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito.

Clottey hasn't been in the ring since November of 2011 when he stepped up to the middleweight division and stopped Calvin Green in two rounds.

Star Boxing President Joe DeGuardia said, "We're very excited to welcome Joshua Clottey to the Star Boxing team. He's fought the very best in the world in including Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto and he fits very favorable in the mix in the top ten middleweights in the world."

Given Clottey's name, pedigree and fine efforts against top-flight opponents, it's likely, if not probable, we'll see him in-line to face Sergio Martinez, Gennady Golovkin or Peter Qullin within the next 1 1/2 years.

In 1999, Clottey was well ahead against Carlos Baldomir until a repeated clash of heads led to his disqualification in Round 11. And in 2006, he went 12 rounds with Antonio Margarito, dropping a unanimous decision.

The Ghanian burst into prominence in 2008, defeating a somewhat still-youthful Zab Judah. The fight was stopped in Round 9 as a result of an accidental clash of heads. Two judges scored the fight 86–85 and the other judge scored it 87–84, all in favor of Clottey.

A 3 to 1 underdog, Clottey dropped a split decision to Miguel Cotto in 2009.  In that bout, despite being floored in Round 1, he outlanded Cotto 222 to 179 according to CompuBox Punchstats.

And, of course, the following year he lost a wide unanimous decision to Manny Pacquiao but managed to touch-up PacMan with an occasional hard right hand.

Tough, experienced and resourceful, will the 5'8" Clottey, who turns 36 in October, be able to get a crack at Martinez or Golovkin?

Star Boxing will return to its home on Long Island, at The Paramount in Huntington, New York on Saturday September 14, with the tenth installment of "ROCKIN FIGHTS" featuring a 10 round middleweight bout between Joshua Clottey 36-4 with 22 KO's and Dashon Johnson 14-12-3 with 5 KO's.

"It's always special to promote at The Paramount," DeGuardia said. "It's truly one of the premier venues for professional boxing in the country. This is the tenth "ROCKIN FIGHTS" event held at The Paramount, the other nine were sellouts."

"Showcasing the event will be Huntington's favorite son, undefeated Chris Algieri as well as Joshua Clottey in separate bouts," said DeGuardia.

"Also, knowing that September 14th is such a big night in boxing, we will broadcast the Mayweather vs Alvarez championship bout live from Las Vegas following the action in the ring."
