Pacquiao vs Rios: China blockbuster off to poor start

Written by
Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao will face fast-rising sensation Brandon Rios in Macau, China this weekend in what may become (or may have been) an historically-significant event.
Top Rank boxing promoter Bob Arum has been making an effort to sell American boxing and his fighters to the Chinese ever since his successful promotion last April for Zou Shiming's bout.

Date: Saturday, Nov 23, 2013
Time: 9pm ET/6pm PT
Broadcast: HBO PPV
Price: $59.99 ($69.00 HD)

The immature antics, however, displayed by both teams last Wednesday do nothing to advance boxing in China but, instead, show a negative side of U.S. boxing.

Mocking people who are physically handicapped, kicking, shouting obscenities in public and otherwise acting stupid and childish is extremely unprofessional and classless, and Freddie Roach, Robert Garcia and Alex Ariza did nothing but hinder the promotion as far as it relates to impressing the Chinese.

Nonito Donaire, the 2012 Fighter of the Year, explained how those actions show a sign of disrespect in the Eastern culture.

The three-division champion Donaire told the Manila Standard, "China is not into that kind of stuff and we are respectful of the fight game. They take martial arts differently from other people."

"To show lack of respect for others might work in the United States because they like that kind of stuff but it will raise questions in the mind of the Chinese."

Freddie Roach, Robert Garcia, Brandon Rios as well as strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza have shown a total disrespect for themselves and the sport of boxing and are a setback to the advancement of the Sweet Science in China.
