Oliver McCall: Boxing's 'Jason Voorhees' shocks prospect, avenges son's loss

Written by
Like the fictional Jason Voorhees, Oliver McCall just won't go away.
He gets punched and punched and loses on occasion yet always seems to come back to life just when you think he's done for good.

Earlier today, former WBC Heavyweight Champion Oliver (57-13-1, 37 KO) won a split decision over ten rounds against Polish prospect Marcin Rekowski (then 12-0, 10 KO) in the latter's homeland.

McCall, who turns 49 in April, will now face an even bigger Polish prospect, Andrzej Wawrzyk (28-1, 14 KOs), who easily dispatched a woefully over-the-hill Danny Williams in one round on the same card.

Oddly, Rekowski was initially declared the winner but an error was discovered soon after the verdict and the decision was reversed.

The final scores were 77-75 (twice) for McCall and 76-75 for Relowski.

Last May, Rekowski defeated Oliver's son, Elijah (then 11-2-1), via a 5th round TKO.

Dubbed 'The Atomic Bull,' McCall is best known for arguably being Mike Tyson's best sparring partner in the late 1980s and orchestrating a colossal, one-punch knockout upset of then WBC heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis in 1994.

During his turbulent, roller coaster career, McCall has also defeated the likes of Larry Holmes, Lionel Butler, Bruce Seldon, Jesse Ferguson, Francesco Damiani, Oleg Maskaev, Henry Akinwande, Przemyslaw Saleta, Sinan Samil Sam, and Fres Oquendo.

And despite his high level of opposition, the ultra-durable McCall has yet to really be stopped in 69 bouts. The sole TKO loss on his record occured in 1997 when he entered his rematch with Lennox Lewis with serious emotional issues, had a mental breakdown in the ring and quit without putting up a fight.

If the soon-to-be 49 year old McCall defeats Andrzej Wawrzyk (28-1, 14 KOs), don't be surprised if the former champ becomes a relevant contender again.

McCall vs Wawrzyk... Will it take place on Friday the 13th?
