Shannon Briggs, 4-0 in comeback, punishes foe (Video)

While he failed to orchestrate an opening round knockout for the first time in four fights, former WBO heavyweight title-holder Shannon Briggs (55-6-1, 48 KOs) ripped Raphael Zumbano Love (34-8-1, 27 KOs) en route to winning unanimous decision over 12 rounds last night in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Soon after the opening bell, it seemed the 42 year old would earn his fourth first round knockout in as many fights when Briggs dropped his foe in the opening stanza. However, Love, a veteran of 43 pro fights, would successfully weather the storm.

Love, who was often in survival mode, was floored for a second time in the final round and barely made it to the end.

With the victory, Briggs claimed the NABA heavyweight title and may have catapulted back into the WBA's top 30.

Briggs enjoyed a successful amateur stint, becoming a New York City Golden Gloves champion, New York State Champion, and National P.A.L. Champion. In 1991, he finished second in the heavyweight division at the Pan American Games after losing to Cuban amateur legend Félix Savón.

A heavyweight oddity of sorts, Briggs won a majority decision over 48 year old, then-lineal heavyweight champion George Foreman in 1997 in what some consider one of the biggest high-profile robberies in the history of the sport.

In his following bout, Briggs rocked then-WBC Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis in the early rounds before being systematically taken apart and subsequently knocked out in five.

Shannon gained a bit of redemption in 2006 by dramatically winning the WBO heavyweight title, stopping Siarhei Liakhovich in the final three seconds of the contest. He would lose this belt to Sultan Ibragimov the following year.

Briggs, who allegedly ballooned to over 300 lbs during his hiatus, has appeared ripped and fit since his comeback started in March.

Now 4-0 with 3 knockouts, who will the muscled-up Briggs fight next?

Can Briggs, the last American to own a share of the heavyweight title, earn a shot at lineal heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko?

Shannon Briggs is known for his devastating punching power, which has earned him 30 first round knockouts (the most number for any heavyweight champion). Also, he has had at least 3 recorded fights where he has knocked the opponent out in less than 30 seconds.
