Immediately after referee Michael Ortega stopped the fight with 17 seconds remaining in round 3, speculation started on who he would fight next. Golovkin immediately ended the speculation in his post-fight interview in the ring.
"I am very happy and now I only want unification fights. I want [Miguel] Cotto."
Following is post-fight ring interview, Golovin and Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler reiterated the statement that he made in the ring 30 minutes earlier by wanting to unify middleweight titles by fighting Cotto and to prove that he is the best middle weight in the world.
We want the biggest name that will get in the ring with him," Loeffler said. "That's our target. Miguel had a great victory against Sergio. He and Gennady would be a huge fight at the Garden.
A fight with Cotto would be a huge pay-per view attraction; however there are a few wrinkles that could foil this plan.
Loeffler said that they plan to have Golovkin back in the ring in either October or November. That could possibly be a problem if they plan to make a fight with Cotto next, due to the fact that Cotto is scheduled to fight to have his next fight in December. There are also discussions about Cotto fight Saul Canelo Alvarez for his next fight.
If, by any chance, a fight with Cotto cannot be made, than Golovkin and Loeffler said they would be interested in making a fight with IBF middleweight champion Sam Soliman. While a fight with Soliman would not be nearly as big as a fight with Cotto, it would give Golovkin one of the things he’s eager to do and that is to become a unified champion.
Time will tell who Golovkin fights next. But coming off his impressive win over Geale, it’s hard seeing any middleweight defeating him.
