Taishan Dong: 7'0" Chinese brute back in the ringWritten by Leroy Cleveland
Tonight on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes,' jumbo heavyweight Taishan Dong (1-0, 1 KO) faces Tommy Washington Jr (3-6, 2 KO).
The bout will be Dong's second as a pro.
And while it may be too early to consider him a prospect, Mr. Dong seemingly has all of the tools to generate ripples in a division in dire need of fanfare.
Originally from Beijing, China, the well-muscled 26 year old goliath debuted last summer by stopping Alex Rozman (2-7, 1 KO) in the second round, notching three knockdowns in the process.
Weighing a fit 283 lbs, Dong totally dominated his foe, even flooring him with that long, stiff left jab. And while Rozman is not a 'world-beater,' Taishan manhandled him like any strong prospect should.
Is Dong the real deal?
Tall, spry and seemingly powerful, the Chinese Dong is already one of the most intriguing fighters in the sport.
So who is Taishan fighting tonight, again?
Tommy Washington Jr is a 28 year old who hails from Lansing, MI. At 3-6, his record is not exemplary but he has more knockouts than Dong has fights. He debuted in 2006 and won his first two bouts via first round stoppages but has stalled since, dropping his last 6 of 7. However, he has never been stopped in the opening stanza.
Will Dong be the first fighter to knockout Washington in Round 1?
Dong will have critics who will insist he's fighting 'tomato cans.' But before they start trashing the young brute, they should take into account the second opponents of many fight legends, including the boxers listed below:
- Trent Singleton (1-3) >> Mike Tyson
- Reggie Sanders (1-1) >> Floyd Mayweather
- Jerry Strickland (5-26) >> Thomas Hearns
- Juan Gondola (1-8-1) >> Roberto Duran
- Jacob Godinez (4-10) >> Miguel Cotto
While the outcome of tonight's bout may not be in doubt, how Dong will look certainly is. Will he be able to dispose of Washington like a legitimate prospect should? Or will he struggle?
Perhaps tonight's fight will not tell us much but if Taishan looks good, it may keep the Dong hype-train chugging along.
Also on the card will be red hot prospects Joseph Diaz Jr, Julian Ramirez and Diego De La Hoya. The card will take place at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.
