GGG vs Canelo: Jerry Jones Wants Fight at AT&T StadiumWritten by Leroy Cleveland
Businessman, boxing fan and owner of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones is lobbying to host Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin vs Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
The charismatic, sometimes controversial Jerry Jones hosted Manny Pacquiao's bouts against Josh Clottey and Antonio Margarito in 2010, and the 'Home Jerry Built' is believed to be a possible venue for Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez, should it take place.
Other venues being considered are the MGM Grand in Vegas and Madison Square Garden in NYC.
And while the location is still under consideration, GGG's promoter, Tom Loeffler, told TMZ there's a fair chance of GGG vs Canelo taking place September 17. Of course, at this moment, the catchweight issue, and possibly others, have kept a deal from being tentatively finalized.
"Jerry Jones has watched GGG's last few fights and he expressed a big interest in having the fight in Dallas at his stadium," Loeffler recently told TMZ.
"GGG will fight anywhere, but he's aware of Jerry Jones and the atmosphere in his stadium. Whenever Jerry Jones gets involved, he takes promotion to a new level."
"You hear 70,000 people screaming ... the huge video board... it's an amazing venue. And GGG understands the popularity of the Cowboys, the influence they have in the U.S. and around the world."
It's easy to understand why Jerry Jones' AT&T Stadium is such an attractive venue for big-time boxing. In Fall 2014, promoter Bob Arum hinted Canelo vs Cotto was a finalist to host Canelo vs Cotto which took place last November but not at Jones' stadium.
“I think the Cowboys Stadium would be the ideal place for a lot of reasons. I think a stadium with a capacity that can be flexible and achieve historic levels is a good place for a fight between Cotto and Canelo." "We’ve had very good experiences there with the two fights that featured Manny Pacquiao.”
Is Dallas a viable alternative to NYC and Las Vegas, and will the venue be a heavyweight consideration for superfights for years to come?
