Canelo vs Khan Undercard to Feature Big Heavyweight Monster?Written by Leroy Cleveland
Will the Canelo Alvarez vs Amir Khan undercard showcase a heavyweight wrecking machine?
Dubbed the 'Real King Kong,' Cuban heavyweight monster and interim WBA heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) might be featured on the Canelo vs Khan card on May 7.
Of course, there is a catch...
The well-preserved 36 year old is already slated to face heavyweight spoiler Tony Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) on March 5 and must be victorious in that bout to be showcased on the Canelo vs Khan undercard.
We’re looking at possibly having ‘King Kong’ on the card if everything goes well in March,” said Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya to ESPN.com.
“This is the best heavyweight on the planet today and we want to keep him extremely busy and force the top heavyweights to fight him.”
Thompson, 45, will represent a real test for the 245 lb Cuban.
Tony is a tough, cagey awkward southpaw who is capable of making anyone look bad. And despite being in his 40s, he fights with the hunger and desire of a man in his 20s.
How many times has he spoiled the show?
.... Promoters and managers for the following learned the hard way: Dominick Guinn, Luan Krasniqi, Timur Ibragimov, David Price (twice), Owen Beck, Chazz Witherspoon and Odlanier Solis (twice).
Will the Cuban 'King Kong' become just another Thompson statistic? If not, fans who watch the Canelo vs Khan fight card will have a real treat come May 7.
Luis Ortiz is a fighter with solid technical skills who is big, strong and mean.
