Canelo Alvarez vs Amir Khan: Was the Brit's true height a real whammy to Canelo & Co?Written by Leroy Cleveland
Did the Brit's real height shock Alvarez's team?
Many are dismissing Amir Khan's (31-3, 19 KO) chances of defeating - or evening competing - with middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs), citing their presumed size difference.
But once the fight was booked and the two fighters stood face to face during the first Canelo vs Khan presser, Amir, although leaner, appeared visiblty taller than his middleweight foe. (See image above)
However, BoxRec, the consensus top source for boxer records and stats, lists Khan at only 5′ 8½″ and Canelo at 5'9."
Has Khan grown since turning pro? And did Team Canelo agree to this fight based on the presumption their guy would have a slight edge in height and reach, in addition to overall thickness?
Keep in mind, Khan was only 18 when he entered the pro ranks. Perhaps he's grown some?
if so, have his height and reach stats been updated since then?
When I stood next to Amir in 2011 prior to his fight with Lamont Peterson, he appeared to be a solid 5'9½." Maybe 5'10." Moreover, he looked taller than Lamont who, like Canelo, is listed at 5'9."
Did Team Canelo know they'd be facing a fella who is perhaps taller, rangier and quicker than Erislandy Lara, the Cuban welterweight who gave Alvarez all he could handle in 2014?
If Amir Khan is taller than expected, his reaach is likely longer than presumed as well, and that could be key in the fight.
Check out these pics of Khan standing next to others fighters.
Either Khan has grown a bit since turning pro or some boxers aren't being truthful about their height?
.... Or maybe it's a coincidence Khan just happens to look taller in a lot of photos?
Is Canelo really 5'9"?
Is Amir Khan really 5'8½."
Notice the difference in height...
Paul McCloskey is listed at 5′ 8½″, like Khan.
Devon Alexander is listed at 5'9"
And despite being labelled as too small to fight a middleweight, Khan towers over the world's top active welterweight, Manny Pacquiao, who is listed as 5'6" 1/2."
