Canelo vs Golovkin won't happen this year, insists Robert GarciaWritten by Leroy Cleveland
It's perhaps the biggest fight in boxing... Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin.
Hardcore fans are salivating over the prospect for Canelo vs Golovkin but casual fans can take it or leave it.
Casual fans > hardcore junkies.
It's an unfortunate truth in boxing. Superfights rely on the heavy support of casual fans, those who following boxing but consider the sport secondary to another passion, such as football, basketball or baseball.
Without casual fans' support, boxers cannot earn tens of millions of dollars.
As a result, Canelo and Golovkin is probably too much risk for both fighters, considering what their respective payouts would be.
Example: Instead of fighting Canelo for “X”, for instance, Golovkin can earn comparable revenue fighting two or three Dominic Wades.Hence, Gennady can earn still “X” without taking the risk of losing, getting hurt or devaluing his stock.
The same holds true for Alvarez, although his upcoming bout with Amir Khan is presumably far riskier than Golovkin’s next fight.
“As you know, we have to build this fight up to be the next super-fight,” Oscar De La Hoya told BoxingScene following his meeting with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones earlier this year.
“And, yes, it will be the next super-fight.”
“Is he [Canelo] going to fight him Golovkin]?"
"Absolutely, that’s no issue whatsoever. But the question is when."
Elite trainer Robert Garcia recent told FightHype in the video below:
"That's just business..."
"Canelo, who makes them millions and millions every time he fights...why would they risk against somebody like Triple G?"
"...I think Triple G's too dangerous right now...it won't happen until late 2017."
Most non fans of tennis have heard of Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova. And although you may not be a fan of NASCAR, you've probably heard of Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch.
In order for Canelo vs Golovkin to happen, casual fans have to get really excited about Gennady. Once mainstream sports fans, those who don't even like boxing, are familiar with Gennady, Canelo vs Golovkin can take place.
When that happens, both fighters can be handsomely paid for their services.
