Roberto Duran to face Julio Cesar Chavez Sr on July 23?Written by Leroy Cleveland
According to ESPN, retired boxing legends Roberto Duran (103-16, 70 KOs) and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (107-6-2, 86 KOs) may fight each other in an exhibition on the Terence Crawford vs Viktor Postol undercard, July 23.
The elder statesmen will will don headgear and 16 oz gloves should they rumble.
"I don't want anyone to get hurt," Arum told ESPN Boxing. "It's fun, which is what it's supposed to be. We'll have a good card and this will be an added bonus and we'll have fun. We'll pay tribute to the two greatest Hispanic fighters."
Arum added, "I said to Duran, 'Roberto, it's an exhibition,' and he said to me, 'I will kill Chavez.'
He was being Duran.
And Chavez said the same thing to me about Duran. He said, 'I will beat him up,'" Arum said. "I think they were joking, but who the hell knows with these guys?"
Duran vs Chavez, however, has not yet been approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission as they want to examine this match-up more closely before signing off.
Chavez and Duran will turn 54 and 65, respectively, this summer.
In Summer 2013, it was rumored Duran would face then-45 year old former WBA world champion Jorge "Locomotora" Castro (130-11-3, 90 KOS) of Argentina in a three round exhibition. The match was supposed to serve as a farewell and tribute to Castro but the bout never came to fruition.
Why Duran vs Chavez?
As a result of recent changes in HBO's policies, Crawford vs Postol will be showcased on pay-per-view. And while it's one of the best match-ups in boxing, neither fighter is a star yet. Perhaps Top Rank is hoping to lure fans who are or will be undecided in their decision to purchase the event.
NB; The date of July 23 is still "tentative" for Crawford vs Postol.
