Shannon Briggs to face Alexander Dimitrenko (38-2) next?Written by Leroy Cleveland
So who will Shannon Briggs fight on the David Haye vs Arnold Gjergjaj undercard on May 21 in London?
"Yeah, I'm fighting Alexander Dimitrenko," Briggs told Brendan Taylor' of Tru School Sports today.
"He's gonna get knocked out. He'll probably go one round," added Briggs whose demeanor shifted to comical to serious.
"When I win the fight, I'm gonna fight David Haye in Sepetmber."
"He's [David Haye] getting knocked out cold... Cold," a seemingly giddy Briggs projected.
But is Briggs overlooking Alexander Dimitrenko (38-2, 24 KO) should that be his next opponent?
The 6'7" Russian-born heavyweight is a huge step up in class from the level of opponents Briggs has faced recently.
Alexander won his first 29 bouts before dropping a majority decision to Eddie Chambers in 2009. Following the upset defeat, he reeled off three wins before being stopped inside the distance by Kubrat Pulev in May 2012.
Since the loss to Pulev, a top 5 or 10 heavyweight, Alex has defeated six non-descript opponents, winning four of those bouts within the past year alone.
More active than Briggs lately, Dimitrenko's biggest wins are against Michael Sprott, Albert Sosnowki, Luan Krasniqi, Derric Rossy, Ross Puritty and Julius Francis.
The 33 year old Dimitrenko, once touted as a possible successor to the Klitschkos, possesses solid footwork and impressive power, and would be a dangerous opponent for the 44 year old Shannon.
