GGG vs Jacobs: Date and fight, tentativeWritten by Leroy Cleveland
Fresh off his win over welterweight champion Kell Brook earlier this month, middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) could face red hot Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KO) on December 10 on HBO Boxing.
Jacobs, the WBA regular middleweight champion, vaulted into prominence last December by knocking out previously unbeaten Peter Quillin in Round 1 before stopping Sergio Mora inside the distance last week.
“Right now, we’re in preliminary discussions,” Keith Connolly, Jacobs’ adviser, told BoxingScene.com.
“We definitely want to fight Golovkin next. I know a lot of people are scared of him, but Danny told me he saw everything he needed to see in the Kell Brook fight [against Golovkin] to know that he can beat GGG."
"Even though GGG stopped him in [the fifth round], he still saw enough holes there where Danny thinks if he hits Golovkin with those same sorts of punches, it’ll be lights out for GGG.”
So why is GGG vs Jacobs a real possibility?
For starters, the WBA has already requested a showdown between its two highest ranked middleweights. And secondly, HBO Boxing, according to BoxingScene.com, had tentatively held November 26 for GGG and December 10 for Canelo Alvarez. However, the latter won't step in the ring again until May due to a thumb injury so HBO Boxing will likely have the money in its budget to air GGG vs Jacobs on its network for free.
Should this fight happen in December, possible venues include Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center.
