Jones vs Lesnar: Odds a slap in the face?Written by Leroy Cleveland
After defeating Daniel Cormier last night to regain the UFC light heavyweight title, Jon Jones issued a challenge to WWE star and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.
"Brock Lesnar: If you want to know what it feels like to get your ass kicked by a guy who weighs 40 pounds less than you, get in the Octagon," Jones yelled before dropping the mic and leaving the cage.
Will they meet in 2018? If so, who would be the favorite.
Jones vs Lesnar odds
Las Vegas has issued a preliminary betting line. Some will agree with it and some won't.
Brock Lesnar +250
Jon Jones -300
Yes, the Westgate Superbook tabs Jones as the solid favorite. Hence, a successful $300 bet on him would generate $100 while a successful $100 wager on Lesnar would yield $250.
Given Brock's size and perceived strength advantage, as well as his wrestling pedigree, don't be surprised if money comes in on him. Visually, he is the more intimidating fighter and many will likely put money on him for that reason.
So, are the odds a slap in the face to a former Olympic and UFC champion who would enjoy a 40-50-pound advantage should he he face Jones?
What are bettors evaluating?
For starters, a well-rounded fighter with a speed and reach, like Jones, can neutralize a one-dimentional wrestler, like Lesnar, even if the latter is bigger and stronger.
When standing up, how is Lesnar going to defend against Jones' strikes? And even on the ground, Jon Jones certainly wouldn't be cake walk even though Brock would presumably have the advantage.
Secondly, even though neither guy has been extraordinarily active of late for different reasons, Lesnar has fought just once since December 2011. So, no matter how hard he trains, he's bound to have some rust.
Stylistically, it will be interesting to see what strategies Jones and Lesnar employ should they fight.
