Pulev vs Breazeale: IBF eliminator goes to purse bid

Written by

The IBF has selected Kubrat Pulev to face Dominic Breazeale in an eliminator. Because teams were not able to reach an agreement, Pulev vs Breazeale will go to purse bid on April 10th.

While fans and media often complain about heavyweight title challengers, these fellas are worthy. Pulev (25-1, 13 KO) is ranked No. 4 by BoxRec while Breazeale is No. 9 but is arguably more like a No. 6 or 7.

No, it's not Deontay Wilder vs Anthony Joshua/Joseph Parker but the winner has to have someone to fight next, right? Let's just hope the IBF champion, whether it'll be Joseph Parker or Joshua, isn't stripped of his IBF title later this year for opting to defend it against someone else.

Pulev, of course, infamously called off his fight with Joshua late last year forcing Carlos Takam step in to fight Joshua on just 10 days notice.

The 6′ 4½″/194cm well-schooled Bulgarian boasts an extensive amateur pedigree and represented Bulgaria at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China as a Super Heavyweight (+91 kg). As a professional, he's 25-1 with 11 KOs and his lone defeat was a 5th Round stoppage at the hands of Wladmir Klitschko in 2014.

A pro since November 2012, Breazeale participated at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and has a solid amateur pedigree.

At 32 years old, he is now 18-1 with 17 KOs with his sole defeat coming at the hands of Anthony Joshua in a performance Dominic has nothing to be ashamed of.

In February, Breazeale impressively got off the canvas to KO the surging Izuagbe Ugonoh (then 17-0) and has a previous win over Amir Mansour (then 22-1-1) who suffered a severe laceration in his mouth after biting through his tongue and was forced to quit on his stool.

Standing 6'7", Breazeale is 2 1/2 nches taller than Pulev and may have a bit more polish.

This fight's winner will become a a powerbroker of sorts in heavyweight boxing because he'll likely be in the conversation with Parker, Joshua, Wilder, Alexander Povetkin, Luis Ortiz and Dillian Whyte.
