Pacquiao vs Broner: Shawn Porter's advice for ABWritten by Leroy Cleveland
FightHype recently caught up with former welterweight belt-holder Shawn Porter (29-2-1, 17 KO) to get his thoughts on Manny Pacquiao vs Adrien Broner next Saturday.
Porter, of course, defeated Broner in 2015 and boasts additional wins over Danny Garcia, Andre Berto, Paul Malignaggi and Julio Diaz.
When queried from FightHype about Broner's punching power and speed, Porter replied:
"I don't believe in his punching power. I definitely believe in his speed BUT we gotta look at the track record for the last 3 fights."
"Is he using his speed?"
"If he uses his speed, he makes it an interesting fight... He makes it a good fight."
"I don't think it's a fight that he wins but he does make it interesting."
So, what is Broner's best chance to defeat Pacquiao?
"He's gotta be able to counter Manny," chimed Porter.
So, he shouldn't walk Manny down?
"No, he doesn't have to walk Manny down. You walk many down and you're walking into everything."
Are speed and effective counterpunching the key for Broner next weekend?
In 2015, Porter used a stiff jab to get inside and outwork Broner for most of the fight. And while Broner counterpunched, landing clean left hooks and right uppercuts throughout the fight, he didn't do enough to overcome Porter's workrate and aggression.
... And Broner's 12th Round knockdown of Porter was too little, too late.
Two judges had Porter winning by the scores of 114-112 and 115-111, and the third scored it for Porter 118-108.
